WHAT IS WRITING?
Great question! Writing is a process that provides a way to communicate with others a to express our thoughts or ideas in a readable format but…
WHY CREATIVE WRITING?
Creative writing can be used to entertain or educate: to spread awareness about something or someone or to express one’s thoughts or feelings.
But if you want to leave a strong impression on your readers, creative writing is your best tool because it includes poetry, plays, scripts, songs, speeches, and more.
Remember it’s all to do with feelings, thoughts, and emotions, so whether you’re a novelist, a poet, a short-story writer, a biographer or an aspiring beginner, you want to improve your craft. So what is the best way to do that?
Part of what makes creative writing creative is the way you choose to manifest the vision by getting it from your mind to the page. That means you’ll want to use more anecdotes, metaphors, similes, and figures of speech in order to paint a vivid image in the reader’s mind.
ELEMENTS OF CREATIVE WRITING
UNIQUE PLOT
Without having a plot, there’s no story and without a story, you’re really just writing facts on paper, much like a journalist. There isn’t anything wrong with that type of writing, but if your audience expects creative writing, make sure you deliver!
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Characters are necessary for creative writing which you can develop in order to tell the story in uncovering who the characters are and how they change throughout the duration of your story. Readers should be able to understand your main character’s purpose from start to finish.
THEME
Every story out there has an underlying theme or message – even if the author didn’t write it purposefully. Creative writing needs that theme or message in order to be complete because it is an part of the beauty of this form of art. By telling a story, you can also teach lessons.
